Yesterday I had a grandmother ask me why we see sooooooo many kids in our office. In all honesty…. children are such a common thing in our office that it has been awhile since someone asked me that question. But, for all of you out there who don’t know why we see so many children, I thought it was important to take a moment and discuss this very important part of our practice.
When I started out in Chiropractic college, my original intent was to work with competitive athletes. I was an athlete… chiropractic helped me immensely with my performance…. it seemed like a natural fit. But the more I learned about chiropractic, the more I realized that if I was able to assess the spine of a child in the early years, I would be able to help my patients prevent many of the problems I was seeing in my adults. It just made sense.
And now that it has been 14 years since I graduated from Chiropractic college, and the number of infants and children that we have been able to help over the years is too large for me to count, I can honestly say that working with children is the most rewarding part of my career. By having the ability to assess a child and remove interference to that’s child’s ability to heal and regulate, we have seen some amazing things over the years. We have helped infants with breast feeding issues, and colic; children with ear infections, asthma, bed wetting, attention issues and so much more… And we have done that with the understanding that Chiropractic is not the cure for any of these “diseases”. Our job as Chiropractors is to understand & trust that the body has an amazing ability to heal. By locating areas in the spine which are interfering with the way the body is designed to function, we simply create an opportunity for the body to heal. And with children… It often doesn’t need much more than that to point them in the right direction.
